How Do You Spell Toyota

After visiting Hauswitch Home + Healing in Salem, MA, I knew I needed to try one of their handmade spell kits.

There are five spell kits to choose from: North Wind, Open Window, HausWarming, Co Habitate, and Dream Haus. Since I don't have any problems with my roommates―we've been together for three years now―and our lease isn't up until the summer, that narrowed it down to North Wind (designed to protect your home from negative energy) and Open Window (a sort of spring cleaning for the way you feel in your house). I ended up choosing the North Wind spell, which is said to "blow away evil spirits, weird vibes, and heebie jeebies," all while protecting your space, because the first floor of my building used to be a doll hospital. Nothing that scary has ever happened in the apartment, but you can never be too safe. Nobody wants an Annabelle situation, after all.

I was going to perform the spell by myself, but then I asked my roommates if they wanted to help, and they were 100 percent into it. We cleared off the kitchen table and opened the house-shaped box. Inside are all the ingredients you need, plus a meditation card with instructions for how to cast the spell. We started by lighting the candle and incense on a plate. (Spoiler: It smelled like sandalwood, filling the room with a woodsy, amazing fragrance.)

Next, we put the crystal inside the small cauldron and took turns pouring salt over it until the little bottle was empty. After this we held hands, closed our eyes, and focused on the meditation part of the spell. That was it! We left the candle and incense burning for a little longer, but after we blew the flame out the only thing left to do was sprinkle some salt around the apartment and outside the door. It was that easy.

So, what happened next? A lot, and also nothing at all. Before we started, my roommates decided the spell would also clear the apartment of ex-boyfriends' bad vibes. I couldn't disagree—the spell supposedly clears out negativity, right?—and I was interested to see how this would affect the results. That night, I dreamt that I was dating my new crush―it was awesome. It was such a good dream that I actually couldn't fall back to sleep in the morning. I had to get up and go to the gym to burn some of my newfound energy. A few days later, one of my roommates got a text from her ex, but she wasn't actually in the apartment when he texted her. Kind of weird, right?

Another strange thing that happened was that I got six mosquito bites over the course of two nights. Then, a few days later, the exterminator showed up unannounced and sprayed the apartment for bugs. He always shows up unannounced, but what are the odds he came the same week I was brutally attacked by a blood-sucking monster in my sleep? I like to think it wasn't a coincidence, but rather the North Wind blowing help my way.

I think we'll have to wait a little bit longer to see what else happens in our apartment―I'll update this story if anything interesting goes down. But in the meantime, I highly recommend you try a spell kit for yourself. 'Tis the season, right?
