Ontario is embracing the time to come of self-driving technology

Ontario will now allows companies to sell self-driving cars that feature Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.

Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek appear the alter at the University of Waterloo on Tuesday.

The updated regulations volition permit for the testing and sales of Level 3 autonomous vehicles. Notably, in its press release, the province says Level 3 democratic vehicles must be sold in the province earlier individuals can legally drive them here.

Level three autonomy means that the automobile has 'conditional automation.' That is, the vehicle acts similar a co-pilot and can manage most safety-disquisitional driving functions, but a driver needs to be ready at all times. Basically, a level three autonomous vehicle is capable of completing tasks similar overtaking other vehicles on the highway and transferring onto an off-ramp.

Most self-driving systems, including GM's Super Prowl and Nissan's ProPiot Help, are classified as Level 2 democratic systems, meaning they can keep a machine inside of a lane and command its speed but not much else.

Currently, there aren't whatever Level 3 autonomous vehicles that Canadian consumers can buy. Still, Audi has said that its upcoming A8 sedan will exist one of the first cars to feature the technology. Additionally, Tesla recently added some Level 3-like features via its 'Navigate on Autopilot' software update.

The province says it will keep to permit road tests of self-driving vehicles and continued truck platoons as long as there's a licensed driver behind the wheel at all times.
